Well Vancouver, Play On! came, we saw, and we conquered. And if you happened to miss it, we have the full recap for you right here, right now!
It started out Thursday when the Play On! crew hit the site in full force. Outside, set-up was in full swing. There were a few sun burns, but luckily we had some Aloe and helpful hints from other staff members to take care of that.
(Goodies for the Player Bags)
Inside, however, was a bit of a different story. There was staff and volunteers preparing the packages for each and every player. Due to unfortunate events, the PopChips bags were stuck at the border, so we did all we could so that when the bags got there, filling the bags was as easy as 1,2,3. We sent out Court, a fellow intern, to drive to the border and pick the bags up. I think you can agree with me that that is dedication!
Thursday, we threw in the towels early to get rested up for Check-in, which started Friday at 1, and boy did we have a big crowd. With 350 teams to check in, the Play On! crew was ready and rearing to go. We set up outside London Drugs in Coquitlam Centre and started handing out shirts and taking names. It was a busy afternoon, but the Play On! staff persevered to make sure everyone’s team got checked-in and were ready to go. There was even a rep from KPMG in attendance to take count of all our players for the Guinness World Record!
(Waiting to Check-In)
The big day came all to soon as Play On! staff started to arrive at 6:00am to start getting ready for more check-in and the ball drop. Everyone grabbed their Tim Hortons and away we went.OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING!
For anyone that was there for the 8:00 start, we all had the honor of listening to the lovely, and might I add, incredibly talented Natasha Zimbaro, Sony Recording Artist, who did the honors of singing our Country’s cherished anthem at the first Elite Game on the Tim Horton’s feature rink. A beautiful singer for a beautiful morning!

The grounds were busy as teams were heading to and from games, checking scores, buying equipment, and checking out our Sponsor’s Village, which included Tim Hortons, BC Tree Fruit, Stub Hub, Popchips, Booster Juice, Factory Hockey, Coquitlam Express, Montana’s, and CFox. Games were in full force, taking place on 34 rinks spread out across the outside parking lot at Coquitlam Centre.
The Celebrity game kicked off at noon, with familiar names like Jeff Tambellini, Haleigh Callison, Mark Donnelly, Gino Odjick, Karm Sumal, Spencer Humphries, and Cam Reid for the Red Team. The White team was led by Brandon Gallagher, Josh Nicholls, Sarah Blyth, Trevor Loke, Cliff Ronning. Jeff’s team took the title, winning 8-7. Our fantastic celebrities were rewarded with prize packs from Nando’s and PopChips.

(Play On! Vancouver 2013 Celebrity Game Players)
Playoff schedules were posted online by 9:00pm Saturday night with little to no problem due to an awesome new idea put into place by Play On’s infamous Operations Director, Charles Musto.
Playoffs kicked off at 8am on Sunday as teams buckled down and started to lay down the dekes, as they were all vying for the title of Champion.
Everyone had the chance to regroup over lunch, as players prepared go head-to-head, or rather head-to-goalie, to win the Break-Away Challenge Title. Unfortunately, the Break-away Challenge was cancelled due to some weather interference, and by interference I mean rain flooding rinks! But, as true Canadians, and for the love of the game, we wiped our eyes, shook our hair, and kept on playing!
(Escaping the Downpour)
Games slowly wrapped up in the afternoon, as teams were eliminated, and divisions whittled down to the last teams standing. The winners of each division, listed below, walked away with prizes from Granville Island Brewing, The BC Lions, SFU Men’s Hockey, Coquitlam Express, Coquitlam Adanacs, Factory Hockey, Nando’s, Purdy’s Bath & Body Works, A & W, and many more.
We had a few guest appearances by Hawkey the Hawk from the Abbotsford Heat, and Barci from Nando’s to cheer on the players. Other highlights included munching on bags of PopChips, rocking some sweet orange or blue shades from StubHub, the most delicious apples slices from BC Tree Fruit, and free coffee and timbits from Tim Horton’s.
